Bankoyaki Daruma ornament from Kawamizu kiln

Usually made of papier mache and painted red, Daruma dolls (modelled after Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen sect of Buddhism)are a popular good luck charm in Japan. They are commonly associated with perseverance and the accomplishment of one's goals and can be found in a variety of sizes and styles. Presenting a more refined image than its garish counterparts, this Daruma from Banko nevertheless encapsulates the spirit of the traditional dolls with its fierce expression and typical facial hair. The faceted body cleverly evokes the drape and folds of the daruma's cloak, giving an added slant to an iconic favorite.
