Mayake (Tankasai) teapot by Konishi Yohei #188
Tankasai is Yohei’s original term for the triple firing technique which creates this carbonized effect.
Once the piece has been wood fired, it is fired in a gas kiln to stabilize the glaze and then fired in an electric kiln with charcoal.
When the clay reacts to the charcoal the finish is enhanced further, achieving an attractive burnished effect.
There is a tight and stable firing crack in the spout. It should not develop further or cause any structural issues.
Handcrafted by craftsman Konishi Yohei, eldest son of Yusen I, recognized as a Tokoname City Human Cultural Asset and recipient of numerous prestigious prizes.
