Rokkasen shudei teapot by Koie Hiroshi of Reikou kiln
This shudei teapot is inscribed with traditional waka poetry from the "Rokkasen", who were the six waka poet laureates of the early Heian period (the 9th century). The six poets were namely, Henjou Soujou, Ariwara no Narihira, Bunya no Yasuhide, Kisen Houshi, Ono no Komachi and Ootomo no Kuronushi. The poems have been engraved with very fine calligraphy strokes onto the body of the pot which is a smooth shudei with a sujihiki (fine horizontal lines) design. The lid is engraved with the three kanji characters for "Rokkasen". The tall "foot" and the vertical grooves pressed into the round body of the pot give it an unusual shape. A classically elegant teapot with a historical touch.
