Thirty-Six Immortal Poets engraved Tokoname shudei teapot by Gisui #2
The Thirty-Six Immortal Poets — Sanjūrokkasen in Japanese — are a group of master poets selected by the renowned poet Fujiwara no Kinto around the year 1009.
Considered the pinnacle of classical Japanese verse, their works have been celebrated for over a millennium as the finest examples of waka poetry.
On this extraordinary teapot, all 36 poems are engraved by hand by Masuda Shizu, one poem for each of the immortal poets, encircling the warm vermilion surface of the clay.
The engraving is a work of calligraphy in its own right, requiring exceptional skill and patience.
Made with unblended Tokoname shudei clay.
Handcrafted in Tokoname, Japan by traditional Tokoname craftsman Gisui.
